What Inspired Awesome Ice Cream Pot
OUR
STORY
The story of Awesome Ice Cream Pot begins not in a boardroom, but in the humble living room of the Modise family, with a mischievous toddler named Boikanyo, affectionately nicknamed Pikachu. Pikachu, the youngest son of Bra Oupa Modise and nephew to Kamogelo Modise, had an unusual culinary preference: soil. His quiet moments were often a tell-tale sign that he was indulging in his earthy snack.
One day, while the family was chatting, Pikachu's silence raised an alarm.
"Boikanyo!" Bra Oupa called from the living room, his voice echoing through the quiet house.
A muffled "hmmmm" came from somewhere outside.
Bra Oupa called again, "Boikanyo!"
The same muffled sound returned, "hmmmm," but this time it sounded like there was something in the boy's mouth.
Growing suspicious, Bra Oupa asked, "What are you doing?"
"I'm eating soil," came the muffled -garbled reply in baby talk.
Bra Oupa turned to his sister, Promise, with a confused look on his face. "What did he say?" he asked.
Promise, the expert on all things "baby talk," had a confused look on her own face as she deciphered the words. "I think he said he's eating soil," she replied.
They both rushed outside to find his son with a heap of soil in his mouth. Pikachu started crying as soon as he saw them and ran to his uncle.
"Uncle, may I please have ice cream?" he asked, a plea in his voice despite the dirt still clinging to his lips, a treat he had come to associate with his uncle's visits.
To curb this peculiar habit, the family began a unique form of discipline: threatening to withhold Kamogelo's beloved ice cream if Pikachu was caught eating soil again. The burden fell on Kamogelo to find a solution. Drawing on his family's history in the ice cream business—a legacy started by his older brother, Bra Oupa—Kamogelo came up with a brilliant idea. He crushed chocolate biscuits and choc-chips to create a "chocolate-soil" that looked just like the real thing. He piled it on top of ice cream and served it to Pikachu. This was a delicious alternative to the real soil.
The creative solution sparked an idea in Kamogelo's mind in 2012: an ice cream dessert that looked like a potted plant. He began experimenting, adding mint leaves to his "chocolate-soil" ice cream to complete the illusion. Though the idea was put on the back burner for a while due to perceived costs, it never left him.
After a few years of trying different business ventures, including a short-lived ice lolly business and a foray into selling sealed cups of "Awesome Ice Cream," Kamogelo returned to his plant pot concept. In late 2022, he decided to open a physical shop in Mamelodi West.
He perfected a new recipe that included finely crushed clay rock soil within a rich dark chocolate ice cream, topped with the chocolate-soil and mint leaves. He rebranded his business to "Awesome Ice Cream Pot"
The initial attempts to serve the "Clay Rock Soil, Plant Ice Cream" in a regular ice cream cup failed to capture people's imagination and the "Clay Rock Soil" did not fascinate customers. Kamogelo knew he had to remove the "Clay Rock Soil" Ingredient and it had to be served in a real plant pot to be convincing. However, a major hurdle stood in his way: how to plug the drainage holes in the bottom of a real pot.
After countless sleepless nights and failed experiments, inspiration struck at a Mug & Bean Coffee Shop. A discarded muffin paper provided the perfect solution. It fit snugly into the pot, preventing any leakage. With this breakthrough, the "Plant Pot Ice Cream" could finally be served in a realistic plant pot. The visual spectacle and unique story quickly spread.
A social media competition for an "Awesome Ice Cream Date" at the new shop in Mamelodi West went viral, drawing people from all over South Africa. The buzz led to an interview on 702 Radio, which cemented the brand's fame. People flocked to Mamelodi West from far and wide, eager to experience the dessert that was both a "plant and an ice cream"
From a toddler's peculiar habit to a viral sensation, the Awesome Ice Cream Pot became an African flagship brand. Founded by Kamogelo Modise, the third son of Nolanga Maria Modise, this unique dessert's story is a testament to innovation and the power of a simple, heartwarming solution.
